February 6th - On this day, in 1952, George VI died and his daughter, Elizabeth succeeded him.
On 31st January 1952, George VI went to the airport, against advice of doctors, to see off Princess Elizabeth, who was going on her tour of Australia via Kenya. On the morning of February 6th he was discovered dead in his bed at Sandringham House. His daughter Elizabeth flew back to Britain as Queen Elizabeth II.
Today marks Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee; sixty years on the throne, serving not only as the Queen of England, but as a number of other responsibilities, including Head of the Commonwealth. She is the second British monarch to reach their Diamond Jubilee, the first being Queen Victoria in 1897.
